The weather for the whole week was not really good. There were showers almost everyday.
But plan was made, no matter what, we gave it a go.
This time, Sarul and Ostad agreed to tag along.

As expected, there were few small size prawns caught. The water condition was not really good. BabyFace took all the fish home.

The weather was fine and we enjoyed ourselves landing prawns after prawns...

and ohhh, we rented an outboard motor too so we don't have to paddle like vietnamese immigrants. This was my first experience operating an outboard motor. Scared for a few minutes, but then i really enjoyed it and now I'm addicting to it. It cost RM30 more with extra tank of petrol (4L).

The water quality was fine. Bface even landed a freaking CRAB.

Tanjung Lumpur's Bridge/ Sg Belat Trawler Factory

Madi told me a long time ago, he caught his 1st silver barra (in Kuantan) just under Tangjung lumpur's Bridge using ' udang pasar'.

It is the mighty Sungai Kuantan Estuary.. a kilometre away from the open sea and I had bad experiences with kuantan river. I don't have good catch here!!! I fish here since I was a kid, The duris dan sesirats are plenty and having them on your hook can really spoil your day.

But, what the hell. I gave it a go along with babyface and big joe.

In the end.... still, we landed a bucket full of sesirats

On the way home, we stop at Kg. Kurnia to search for 'rent a boat' service. There are at least 3 operators we came across.

We decided to return here again next week for giant prawns.
In the meantime, lets pray the weather next week will be ok and the prawns are in their feeding mood.

Sg Belat Trawler Factory

The making of a Trawler. We were amazed, stunned and happy to see such thing exist in Kuantan. It is a work of art and perfection.

The green and brown trawlers are brand sparkling new... while the blue one on the left are docked for refurbish process/ repairing.

Those wooden boxes are filled with concrete. Maybe, for anchoring.

We cannot stay long as there were dogs and it started to rain as well. Our trip here will never be forgotten.

Seberang Balok - The return

It was Sunday, clear sky and we were bored to death. We ended up at Seberang Balok leaving our wives and kids with not so sweet smile at home.
Bottom? Yeah, we were too lazy to do anything else as it was so hot to be in the open.
News papers, cold cendol drinks, music from the RM2k sound system (Blasting Janis Joplin, MotorHead then Marylin Manson) and away from wives. We called it Heaven.

The water was black and murky and at its lowest level. The tide was slow, and so did the fish appetite.

Tired of waiting,I grabbed my casting set and start to blind cast .Almost 2 months of practice, I seemed can control the backlash and know how to set the magnetic brake as well as using my thumb as a brake. But it was very hard to cast precisely at the tight places. It ended up in the tree.

It was my favorite lure by strike pro. So, using an an old technique I learnt few years back, I tried to salvage the lure but failed.
Big Joe came to help. Hurt himself in the process. The sharp hook penetrated deep into his finger. It was not a barbless hook. So you can imagine yourself the screaming and cursing involved.

Kenyir's Titanic

I saw many people doing boating activities, not wearing any life-jacket.

I'm doing the same thing too. whenever, i went to sg belat, the life jacket becomes my butt's padding.

It is plain stupid.

It is different here in Kenyir. The visitors and the boatmen normally put on their life jackets. It is automatic.
May be, because of the hidden danger of the submerge logs and the volume of the waters, it creates fear and force people to put on their life jacket.

The boathouse, once it parked and anchored, it wont sail away unless for the reasons of safety or heading home. That is why, each boathouse is equipped with at least 2 speedboats.

It's then up to you to explore the place and searching for promising spot. The boatmen really dont care about how you operate the speedboat as well as how good you are navigating without getting lost. They really don't care if you fill the boat with 12 people while it should be 3. And i dont know why. May be they want the costumers to think and act like adults and take care of their own safety.

But few don't!!!!!

and this is what happen when you failed to think straight.

We were preparing to head home when it's happen.

It happen because of overloaded. 4 adults took a boat ride. 1 of them is super over weigh sitting at the bow of the boat. Very bad decision. I'm not blaming the man for being fat. But you should know better. The boat can float, but once you open the throttle, the drag will pull the bow down. If the bow is under weigh, water will start pouring in and that what was happen .

Lucky for them, they put the life jacket on. They lost all the rods and reels, tackle boxes, baits and a couple of digital cams .
( this is the reason i don't bring mine when i went out boating)
They also lost they machoness. I really felt sorry for them.

In the panic, they tried to salvage the boat. If i were them, I will swim to shore for safety first. May be they tried to be responsible.

He towed the sinking boat to the shore. All we can do was, watch and making comments.

The sinking boat lost its engine. RM2-3k went down deep in the lake.

The overweigh man at the stern. He was the last person who climbed back up the boathouse. I felt sorry the most for him. Well dude, cheer up, shit does happen. I hope the rest of the pack wont blame him for the incident. Everybody on that boat not thinking straight and wisely.
You should click this picture to enlarge it because you can see there is a bamboo raft between the boat and the boathouse. When i was exploring various spots on the previous day, I saw that raft 7-8 km away from our camp. It was tied to a small island with a wooden hut on it. It seem, nobody was on that island. Later that evening, the dudes on Class A boathouse towed the raftback . They were so happy and celebrating their finding. They even towed the raft few feet in front of our boathouse to show off.
And I think, it was the reason why they sank. They stole the raft and now they lost theirs. It was an instant KARMA.

Tasik Kenyir- The Trip

It all started with this fella... Mr Amy Darling. He is our new IT Technician, and from Trengganu.
He was the one who brought up the idea that everybody in the office should get together and doing something manly. He suggested we should join the Army Forces or go to Thailand hunting girls and trannies. He even suggested we drive our own car to the max and see who gonna crash first.

Poor him, nobody take his suggestion seriously. It is not because he is dumb or anything, He is perfectly magnificent at his work and a genius in troubleshooting PC related problems. But hell, nobody gonna did anything stupid just to prove who is more manly than others. Not until he came up with the idea we should go to Lake Kenyir and catch the biggest fish. Now, everybody open their eyes and agree.

So off we went to Lake Kenyir.

It was a disaster from a start. Rain cats and dogs all the way from Kuantan. Up until Kuala Berang, we had to drive thru at least 3 flooded road. The deepest was about a feet and half . And my Perodua viva was giving me no trouble crossing.

When we arrived at the jetty, Ostad and his fellow mates were not there and stucked somewhere because of the flood. We waited almost 5 hours for them to come. They had to use super alternative route including dirt road.

We were planning to camp in The National Park at first. But because of the late depature, we settled somewhere 2 hours boat ride from the jetty.

Baitcaster? I sux big time. BirdNests after BirdNests. I ended up cutting about 7 meters of the line to untangle it. I need more practice.

It was closed a few weeks ago. But opened again for visitors and anglers. Big Joe and Fairus rowed their boat close to the thrashing stream. They caught nothing.

It was wet, slippery, cold and foggy. Sometimes, there were actually no body on the deck fishing.

BabyFace's tummy is growing!!!! Bath with super cold water will make his tummy flatened. That's what he believes.

Ostad's cousins. Braver than the beaver. They go to Kenyir 5-8 times per year. But at this spot, Sg Leban (if i not mistaken) was their 1st. It is suck. The National Park is way better. For 3 days, i went out in speedboat searching for tomans , but none was spotted. Not a single soul. No pics of me went out on speedboat as i left my cam on the boathouse for various reasons.

We were so glad that we headed home early in the morning as everybody was homesick, hungry and horny. The spot we camped, have no cellphone coverage. As soon as we reached an area with a coverage, everything flooded in. Thousands of smses, miss calls etc.

The Gorvernment should do something here. It is a stupid slippery jetty. Terengganu is rich with their petroleum's royalty. Spend a little here, please.

I'm planning to go somewhere that people mainly go for fishing and stuff.

I was looking at my rods and reels as i was preparing for the big day, and decided to add a thing or twos into my collection.

so I went to Angler's World for my shopping spree.

I was greeted by Mr Najib , and after picking small items like swivels and lures, he suggested that i should consider to use a baitcaster.

it's been in my mind for so long. But i have to admit, i don't really have gut to try, Eventhough, i went to a baitcasting clinic held by the PureFishing Malaysia recently.

I did try it. How to set the drag, the usage of the magnetic brake , and everything 101 about it.

but i found out, I was slow at baitcaster than my trusty cardinal 300 spinning reel. So i let the thought of owning one drifted away.

Mr. Najib was really 'helping' . The poison he poured , can't be cured.

Snakehead v/s Me

A year went by since my 1st snakehead.

I'm hooked and frustrated.

Almost every weekend, I went around looking for snakeheads. I ransacked every ditch, stream, pond or anything that i thought a snakehead may live. I spent hours with google earth, looking for new spot to be tried.

I bought and tried almost every artificial lure available.

Hard body lure, Soft plastic, spinnerbait, "Younameit" baits.... but still nothing.

This is another reason why i don't really want to post anything here. A year without nothing to boast.

But i tell you what, people... I'm not quitting . If not for the snakehead, I'll do it for the sake of my beer-belly tummy..... ha ha ha...
i gave up smoking and gained weigh ever since... Lure Casting is another way for me to flatened my tummy back ....

I'm not a pay pond addict either.

I bought a house a couple of years ago. And it is in a walking distance to a silverbarra fishing pond.
I swear in the name of Rapala factory owner, I never actually go there and fish. I have to admit, once a while, because of the ultimate boredom, i went there to watch. since January these year, i think, i went there twice.

It is because i'm not that kind of person.

I'm not a gambler and i hate gamblers as much as i hate mosquitoes.

Most pay pond have a scheme or game , lucky draw or some sort, where you have to pay extra ringgit just to make you eligible to win big money if you landed the biggest catch of the day/week.

THAT IS SIMPLY GAMBLING!!!

I am a muslim. A good one. I pray 5 times a day and don't gamble. Thus, i don't want to be anything near gambling. It is not prize money. because you have to pay to win. most of the time, you paid for nothing!!! that is pure gambling. the scheme, IT IS CALLED JACKPOT.

But, i am a supporter of a good pay pond that is built simply because the owner wanted to share the joy of fishing and make as much profit as possible without the element of syubahah (bad).

If you are a follower of my blog, you must know about Pok Tih's pond. It is a good one. Simply built for fishing.

There is another good one i stumbled upon when i was in Kelantan few months back.

It is situated in Kg Gual , few kilometers from Rantau Panjang kelantan.

From Kota Bahru, just a few kilometers from the imigration complex, there is a fire station on your right. opposite of the fire station, is a small dusty junction to kampung Gual. The fishing pond is about 3-4 kilometers down the road.

RM5 per hour with minimum 3 hours. That is the price you have to pay to fish the red belly pacu.

Patin, tilapia, lampam and keli are plenty. But most of them come here for the red belly pacu.

You are free to use any method/ technique as long as you don't trouble others. I saw few locals came with traditional rod made from bamboo. There are no restriction on selection of baits.
you can use animals organ, soft plastic, 'dedak', worm, lure, spoon, dry flies etc....

It is operated by a local as a part time. The owner, is also working , as a teacher.
He said, the pond got restock every thursday afternoon. So it is best to come in Thursday or Friday.

Whenever you are in Rantau Panjang, you can try this pond out.

The 1st time of everything you do, is something memorable. It can be fun, scary, puzzling or simply a mix of everything.

I remembered my 1st time I hit a human being with my car going 60km/h at that time.
It was a small girl age between 5 and 6... she was crossing the road when i hit her head on. I recalled every second of it in my brain, fresh.

I was driving towards PCB when suddenly i saw a small girl trying to cross the road from my right. I honked twice, she hesitated for once but she changed her mind to stop and tried to outrun my car.

I hit the fucking brake as hard as i could, drop to second gear and yanked the parking brake. But the momentum kept the car going. The girl stunned, frozen with panic and fear, turned his body towards me just to be hit. HARD!

Her face slammed to the car's hood. I saw her lips and teeth exploded, spattering blood everywhere. as her face bounced back, so did her body. She was thrown 15 feet away and landed on the asphalt on her back.

the car jerked and died as i did not engage the clutch.

there is no word in this world can describe my feeling back then. I was terrified and scarred and angry as well.

but, a few second after that, a sense of relieved hit me as i saw the little girl sat up and cried. the girl lives, no major injury, only smashed face with no frontal teeth.
the how I settled the mess is now a history.

the point is, it was such a horrific incident that sometimes give me a nightmare.
it was so graphic, that every frame and second of that incident, can be recalled by me easily without losing any single fact.

But not my memory on my 1st Silver barra. I barely remembered what happen, and the feeling? its puzzling and dull.

may be because it was a small silver barra, and when it took the bait, it swam towards the bank where i was standing, no fight what so ever.

But i thanked god as fishing (waiting) for barra proven to be a very tiring and dull experienced.

Kemboja- or Cambodian in English is a people who lives in Cambodia. It is situated somewhere North of the South East Asia regions. I never been there, but I know, it is not a very safe place to live as many of Cambodians fled their country during the war time and never coming back. Kemboja is a term Malaysians use to describe the refugees from Cambodia who live in Malaysia. Kemboja is an immigrant.

All over the world, I can think off 3 types of people. The Natives, The pioneers and The immigrants. From the list above, The pioneers are actually as same as the immigrant. But, it was happen long long time ago before any man could even learn to shave his armpits. Eventually, the pioneers murdered the natives and took away their lands and farm stocks and even the wives. It happen in America and Australia and Palestine and everywhere else .Then, these pioneers denied every right of the natives and set their own country and flag and anthem. So when they declared the land is theirs, other people who came to country after it would be called as immigrants.

Barrack Obama is the cockiest one, as, he now claims the presidential seat. Micheal Jackson is an immigrant from Mars, while Paris Hilton came from a place call ‘stinky brothel’ where the people worship Satans for wealth.

In Malaysia, The Malays are the pioneer. Then comes the Chinese and Indians as immigrants. As Malaysia is among the wealthiest country apart from Brunei and Singapore ( which is onced under Malaysia) , people as far as Ukraine come to set a new life ( most of them become a prostitute in Petaling Street). First there is Indonesian, then, Bangladeshi, Filipino, Thais , Nepalese and Cambodians.

Just like Barrack Obama, after a while, they started to claim this is their land. They built a permanent house and farm and then breed 7 children for each couple and never pay taxes.

They blend in perfectly quick that their size shrunk to our size and their faces started to look like us. The only different is, again, just like Obama, is the language they use. Even though they speak our language, but the dialect sound funny and strange.

It’s a curse if any Malaysian left home without any personal identification as the government set a series of raids from time to time. I have read in the news paper where a local Sabahan was sent to Philipine as he did not have any identification on him at the moment of arresting.

Pekan means small town in English. It is 40km from Kuantan. It is a Royal town of Pahang. The Sultan, even though have a bigger palace in Kuantan, he found Pekan is more suitable and joyful to live in. It is also a birth place of our Deputy Prime Minister Dato Najib ( who is dreaming to be the Prime minister one day).

For a political reason, many of the Kemboja leading a wealthy live here in Pekan. They possessed a big handsome house, a farm and everything to do with agriculture. You can see clearly, their houses are decorated with Political Flag and logo of the ruling government.

The only good thing about the Kemboja for me is, they have the Fish Cage along The Pahang River. With that, under the cages, the Giant Prawns live to steal food and seeking shelter from the predators. The Kembojas are kind enough to let us fishing on the cage . How ironic..... isn't it?

There is nothing wrong with the boat. But if u look closely, the engine is similar with the one used in Thailand , Vietnam and Cambodia. The engine, which is a modified one from a unit used as a water pump, lawnmower and everything else. Here, we called it "enjin sangkut" or "enjin galah"

KUANTAN 12 Mac ¡ª Seorang pesara yang dipercayai terjatuh ke dalam Sungai Belat, berdekatan kawasan perumahan Taman Inderapura, dekat sini ketika memancing Selasa lepas ditemui selamat hari ini.

Ketua Operasi Bomba dan Penyelamat Kuantan, Penolong Penguasa Bomba, Hamdani Madon berkata, mangsa, Razali Jaafar, 58, dikatakan memancing ikan di sungai tersebut dan dipercayai terjatuh ke dalam sungai pada hari itu.

¡°Keluarga mangsa yang menetap di Gudang Rasau dekat sini membuat laporan polis semalam apabila mangsa tidak pulang ke rumah selepas pergi memancing sendirian Selasa lepas,¡± katanya kepada Bernama di sini.

Operasi mencari bermula sejak 8 pagi tadi dan berakhir pada 11.35 pagi apabila mangsa ditemui tertiarap di pinggir paya bakau kira-kira 500 meter dari kawasan hilir sungai, katanya.

Mangsa ditemui dalam keadaan lemah dan tidak bermaya sebelum dibawa ke Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan (HTAA) Kuantan untuk menjalani rawatan lanjut.

Operasi mencari dan menyelamat disertai dua buah bot polis, sebuah bot bomba, sebuah bot Jabatan Pertahanan Awam dan tiga bot nelayan.

Some People live as a burglar. They earn their living by sneaking in from house to house just to grab anything that is potentially valuable. Many starts from petty thief. As time goes by, their confident growth. Breaking in, is just as simple as urinating behind the bushes in the central park. Few people even getting old and died as a burglar. But plenty of them either got chase once a while or simply caught by the authority and serving time.

There are stupid or clever and even a god-like burglar. Robin Hood is the hero of the ancient time. People worship him for what he did. And Joe Manneti was a stupid one as he was caught by the police stealing women’s undergarment.

The good thing about burglar is that opportunist will have a business. First there are insurance company that will charge you for their service. I know a friend who insured his house from burglar for RM250 (about USD 78) per year. He’s being doing that since the scheme was introduced in 1999. Since then, never once he make any claim. But he keeps paying.

Secondly, there are pawnshop type store that sells secondhand goods. Or maybe a carboot sale, a garage sale . If you lost a pair of shoes in Penang, try looking for it at Lorong Kulit. Some bloke might have it at his stall for RM10.

With that, here come the third reason.

You could buy something at a knock out price. Imagine you can buy a sparkling bottom shaking Shimano Bait caster at RM50, if you are lucky to find one. Never in my life, I buy something that is so cheap that you might think it is a thing that is stolen from someone else. Not because I’ve got good morale ( neither is bad), but I never come across one. And that leads me, surprisingly, on to this week topic, THE CATFISH THAT ALMOST KILL ME.

The biggest fish you caught is almost the same as the burglar I mentioned above. When they hatched, their struggling to live kicked in. Their instinct and cleverness lead them to a happy life. Just like the police to the burglar, predator is a big threat for every baby fish. Quickly but not all, they learnt how to escape death by playing safe. In a few years time, with luck, the fish become huge and enjoys courting and breeding. Normally, those fish have their own house to live in.

But, one simple mistake, a mistake drive by overconfident and clumsiness, lead the freaking fish to a tasty smelly bait on hook. Just like the burglar when first time they ever got caught by a police, they tried to run as fast as they could. If because of the years of smoking and drinking and with no exercise, his lung starts to protest and the muscles become vegetables. Eventually, The burglar had to stop and face the threat. The struggles start with a hectic movement as he tried to kiss any freedom left. When it failed, he will grab anything to use it as weapon for his freedom. And sometimes, when we read the newspaper, we learnt that some cops died in the line of duty.

That what was happened to me. I’m not dead. But the fish stab me with its humongous sting as it tried to free itself.

It was a cat fish. Fish out by Farmi at Pok Tih’s. We thought it was a pacu as the energy felt from the very end of the line was unspeakable. So strong that Farmi’s antique reel could not control the fight. The drag scream and scream. We could hear the line gonna break anytime soon ( the sound tringgg ting ting tinggg still echo in my head). But being cool, he managed to force the ‘burglar’ closer and I netted the fish safely.

As we studied the handsome creature, the fish thrashed it body in all direction. Sharp pain came from my left ankle as the fish stung me. It hurt like you’ve been stab by a crazy menopause nurse that went Amok when she knows her Viagra-addicted husband run off with their Indonesian maid. Tears streamed down to confirm my pain. But, after the hot-balm applied, and a couple of ponstans, the pain was reduced to a slightly burning sensation.

The cat fish who tried to kill me was weighed at 6.7kg. The fish ended up in Pok Tih’s Frying pan. It tasted like a carrot fossil. Hard and dry.

The monsoon seasons seemed not going to slow down at all. eventhough, less rain, but the water quality of the affected places were at their worst. Despite the condition, I wrestled with farmi about my opinion we should check out Tengku Anis Info gallery, 30km from Kota bahru.

He finally agreed with me and off we went to the well-known casting spot.

It is a beatiful place , at the border between malaysia and thailand. It is separated by the GOLOK RIVER. From the fishing magazine i read before, this spot is rich with silverbarra and mangrove jack. Even there is a photo evidence of a lucky caster with his 10kg barracuda caught with a popper.

But as , we soon realized, there was nothing we could do as the water quality not on our side. There were dozens of people went home empty handed that day. I promised myself to come back at this promising spot this coming MAY .

I made a promise last year. To be involved with the soft plastic thing. and if i dont catch anything by April 2008. I'll quit using those rubbery things. So whenever i went fishing (bottom) i brought my casting set with me. From the day i went to the seminar, i never stop casting using SP. But, i caught nothing and the morale sunk.

It all happened when a caretaker at my office showed me a picture of her ( yeah ... u got it rite.. its a she.. lady angler) with a bucket full of snakehead. I dug out the information from her ( not until i 'belanja' the fellow at the canteen) and texted my associates.

the date was set, and i brought 3 'bakau' spinners ( green-yellow, green-red, white-red), a packet of 'bakau' green grubs and white grubs. Not forgotten, a packet of red-white berkley grub.

While, everybody else busy with their baits, I casted from the second i step off from my ride. I changed the lures every 10 minutes . Not a single bite. Getting frustrated, with the boys teasing me to get my hands dirty on baits, i went further up stream and casted. The boys were having their sweet time landed fish after fish.

As boredom set in, i just simply cast without giving much attention to it. Then... a sudden jolt at the end of the line! As i pulled, the line moved to my right. and wham, the freaking snakehead jumped. the fish went free along with the spinner.

I again, changed the lure to a green grub. After 2 casts, without knowing what happen, i've landed my first snakehead on SP. i screamed with joy...

the spot... look promising. And it is a snake head's kampong.

PART 2.

With the previous victory as a moral boost, i went to the place again with jojie.
I made my first cast, targeted at the snags 10 feet in on the opposite side. Nothing happened.
Made my second cast, retrieved the line slowly with few pause , and it got stuck. I raised the rod higher just to get it free from the snags. The line moved to the right, very fast. Panicking, the creature jumped. My heart just pounded, reeled in fast, and i've landed my second snakehead using cheap bakau SP. The fish weighs just under 800gm. I set the beautiful creature free.

Actually, i didn't remember much on how i reacted. It happen so fast, my instinct did the rest.
Casting is so much fun. But i hope, i will experience more of this phenomenon at the snag free spot so that i can enjoy every second of it.

What next?

Madie and me , for the past 4 weeks, were actually doing some casting at some secret spot with lots of gigantic tomans (Channa micropeltes). We were using abu tormentor lures. Up until today, its just fishless. There are lots of things to be learned. Madie is better than me as he went to several casting trips before. So i'm still learning, and madie gives his good hand on it.

Semuji Agro Resort

My son is dying to fish with me. Every time i went fishing, i left him crying at the gate as bringing him might cause me a trouble or just simply the safety issues.

The safest place i could take him fishing with me is Semuji Agro Resort. It is the last place i would go fishing, but no other option left.

My son is 7 years old. And like many others 7 year old, he will jump around without thinking the dangers lurking in the corners. He had to wait 2-3 years before he could be fishing with me.

The main target was Patin. I used "dedak" ( speacial powdery bait sold at anglers store). Mixed the dedak with a chicken egg, cat's food and flour.

I actually doing nothing but set the bait for my son. He did the rest. And he was happy like a clown.

It is just 10km from my inlaws' house. Easy to access and rich with freshwater species like patin, tengalan, lampam and toman.

The bad thing about this place is, the locals are the netters. They set the net every 3 feet. So u had to be smart to fish here.

this river is totally not affected by the monsoon.

I didn't bring my Lures... sebarau is boilling everywhere.

lampam ( Barbonymus gonionotus) are plenty. a 400g specimen is common.

Every year, the months of November and December are the months of monsoon . Normally, the fishermen are rested due to the rough wind and sea. For anglers, they switch either to the Paypond or inland fishing spot such as small river, lakes and ponds.

Last night, the news reported a very high tide was occurred in the east coast region of Malaysia. Few villages near the sea shore was experienced flash flooded.

We decided to head to pantai Sabak near Kota Bahru to witness the aftermath and trying our luck fishing.

When we arrived at the location, the villagers were busy cleaning their houses. We surveyed the location, and there were no chance for us to do surf fishing. There were heavy waves and the wind blew at 30-40km/h .

We then traveled 10km inland to fish at the Sabak’s River. 3 hours fishing, and we caught only small baji around 100gm. We set the creature free. Farmi tasted the water, and its too salty for the normal condition. The fish may went up stream more than we could imagine. We spoke to the local, they reported, the netters caught an amazing numbers of silver barras and mangrove jacks. We decided to go home fishless

Its my holiday. For a month. A month without office works in my mind. A month full of fishing. For the whole month, I’m in Kota Bahru. A state with hundred of promising fishing spots.

27^th November

It was a second morning I’m in Kota Bahru. Farmi was waiting his next construction project to be launch. He just need an approval letter from the municipal council to start working again. With me in Kota Bahru, he can’t resist to set a fishing trip for both of us.

First on the list was Pok Tih’s.

I really have an issue with this place. Since the day one I set foot there, not a single Pacu could be landed by me. Farmi was different. He landed the fish many times before. To make it legal, on a trip with me, the score was 2 to zero. Unlucky is the perfect word to describe my experience fishing for Pacu at Pok Tih’s.

Purposely, we brought lots of rambutans for Pacu’s baits. This time, Patin is not on the list as we targeted the ferocious pacu. We fished for 2 hours, and yet, we landed few stupid patins using the special bait for Pacu. As we puzzled by the situation, Pok Tih came with couple of chicken’s heads. He ordered us to change the hook to the bigger one. Using a steel leader (15p) and 3/0 Mustad hooks, he set the baits. The only reason was simple, Patin’s mouth is not big enough for the chicken’s head.

An hour went by, I just landed a freaking 3 kg keli (African catfish) . The fish fought harder than patin but a little less than Pacu.. As we settled down, Farmi’s rod shook violently and flew a couple feet from the floor but he grabbed the rod on time, a second away before the rod took a swim. Almost an instant with the incident, the water about 15m in front of us exploded. A smile was spotted on farmi’s face. A Pacu was struggling to get free from the deadly hook. But the hook was deep inside its mouth and its not a seahawk hook. It was Mustad. Twice stronger than seahawk. The fish jumped several times. It dashed, to left and right, every creatures in the pond jumped away shockingly. It was a chaotic moment. Finally, the fish swam toward us. With a tremendous speed, it tangled the line between the pier’s pillars. Pok Tih’s son came with a fish scoop to make the ritual easier for Farmi. Finally, the score changed to 3 – 0.

Satisfied? I am not! I wanted the bad ass Pacu.

A fish this big can fight like a satanic army.

The catch of the day

28^th November

BabyFace was also in Kota Bahru to visit his mother. I broke the news about my trip to Pok Tih’s. He agreed to follow us this morning. I let him used my Daiwa set as he brought nothing. He was happily landed Patin after Patin.

Farmi had to went home early as he had few things to be settle. Using the same baits as yesterday, yet, I landed another Keli about 5kg in weighs. 3 hours went by, BabyFace was really enjoying his sweet time fishing and torturing my daiwa set. We changed location, tired of sitting on the obsolete pier, we went to rest on the green grass on the other side of the pond. It was noon. We got no reaction from the pond’s community. We left the rod on the rod stand and retreated under the cool shady of mango tree.

As we chatted , we heard “zeeeeee……Zeeeeeee….Zeeeeeeee …..” My daiwa Crossfire bent. The butt of the rod was not on the ground. Made a quick dashed but it was too late for me. The rod, was not on its stand anymore. The rod went swimming in pok Tih’s pond. At the same time, we heard a scary splash under the pier as the fish trying to break free. Not a word spoken. Just Pok Tih screaming about his pet thrashing the pier’s pillars and asking why I’m not retrieving my line. I just answered with my week voice about I lost my favorite rod.

Without thinking twice, I took off my pants and went into the pond to salvage the rod. The thrashing under the pier had stop. I spent 30 min in the waist deep pond to look for the rod. Finally my bare feet got tangled with some sort of line. I pulled it out, it was almost transparent light blue line. Without a doubt, it was a line that I use for the lost set. I pulled it out , and yes, I got my favorite rod back. On further inspection, the 15p steel leader, was broken. I don’t know how big the fish was, but estimated around 5kg.

We packed our stuff and went home. I promised to pok Tih to come again soon just to fight his monster pet. I spent the whole evening cleaning and servicing my set and wondering how on earth I’m going to beat farmi as the score remain 3-0.

It is my birthday. I decided not to go fishing today. But, I brought my family to a diner near a fishing spot in Tanjung Lumpur. Well I guess, an angler could not be too far away from a water source. Even when you are not fishing, to be near a fishing spot is a must.

My wife gave me a cool quick dry T-shirt from PureFishing as a birthday’s gift . It is a lovely T-shirt with PureFishing products’ emblems.

We didn’t really planned this trip. It just happened as we stumbled upon each other at the office due to unfinished job need to be settled. At 10 a.m, we done with our work, and decided to play with SP at either Kuantan Port or Kemaman river.

We need to practice and experience catching fish using SP. So off we went.

This time, we decided to practice bottom fishing as well, we stopped at Beserah to buy some fish for bait.

God have reasons… and we caught nothing big but a couple of baby Duris and surprisingly, epul caught a crab. We spotted a long and big net along the river. It was about 2-3 km long. And they installed it zig zagging along the river. There was no way we could catch any fish that day. So we decided to change location, kuantan Port.

My big brother, Jojie, is now working with a construction company belong to a Dato (VIP). Previously, I had covered a story in this blog about Kuantan Port Breakwater. It is the same spot. The spot now closed to public due to the security reason. That piece of land is belong to that Dato. What we knew as an access road to the breakwater, is now fenced and there are security people guarding that place.

Despite all that, we still managed to get in as we using a different path either to the north or south . We spent 3 hours casting just to watch our SP been carried away by a big wave. I changed to eupro crank bait, then, eupro 7cm popper, but it was useless… the wind blew the lures away and smashed onto the rock….

We witnessed so many Tenggiri so close to the shore jumping and chasing small creatures. We stopped fishing and just enjoying the drama. It was amazing that such thing usually happen far out from the beach. The drama happened less than 100m from the beach.

We headed home around 6pm that day….

It is a school break. That’s mean a whole lotta fishing days for us. Before each and everyone of us goes back to our hometown, we decided to fish together.

It was Kg Kurnia . There is a small water way to guide the rain as well as the domestic

Waste. The water flows into Belat River which is famous for its GP. But, we wasn’t really looking for GP. Our main objective was to catch any species using Berkley Soft Plastic. We were using 3 types of SP, Gulp, minnow and grub.

We were experienced many strike from what we believed a Haruan ( snakehead sp). But to no avail, we landed nothing. We lost so many SP and we had to quit earlier than we planned.

What went wrong? The lack of skill was the number one reason. We are new to this SP thing and perfection is what we are looking for. Secondly, the fish who took away the SP were juvenile. The SP were too big for them, so when they strike, they managed to bite only at the tail section of the SP. Finally, the hooks we used were not suitable for the SP as they were to big and not meant for the SP. So we had to invest some more money to buy hooks that purposely built for the SP.

It was an oppurtinity of a life time. I couldn’t say no eventhough my schedule was packed and there is no weekend to spare. My office work is up to my chin and the deadline is a corner away. Everything must be done by the 16^th of November. But to hell with work. With Great names coming for the talk, work can waits. Furthermore, it was the 1^st seminar ever in Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu. Tembeling resort is a cool place and the participants only have to pay RM5 for the whole package. We signed up as soon as we got the news.

BabyFace and I arrived 15mins after 8a.m which was too early as the program started at 9a.m. But our anxiety proved to be worthy as early birds got lots of goodies which was limited. We took our sweet time ransacking the Soft plastic box for our favourite SP. I chose to have Berkley Gulp! Minnow Grub while BabyFace grabbed Berkley 7” Power Worm. Those who came late didn’t have the pleasure selecting as the ‘Q’ got longer and longer.

The program started at 9 something. Mr Aznir Malek was the first ‘guru’ to take the stage. He revealed the secret and tips on fishing Kelah. I have to admit that he is a funnyman. The participants never stopped laughing. But deep in the process, so many thing to learn, absorb and practice. This guy really knows his topic and he is really a master on Kelah. I watched his video a couple years before. I never dream to meet him in person. He came with his wife, who is very supportive and shares the same interest with him. What a guy!

Next , Mr oakinn gave his talk on river conservation in Malaysia especially in Pahang . You can read more on this topic at the previous post. Well, he is a noble man. Doing it for free without expecting more than satisfaction and to heal his broken heart over the dead rivers all around us.

Mr Novice

Mr Novice is a well known man in MFN and Fly Fishing Society . Fly Fishing is beyond my interest but still fun to learn. To me, to conclude, Fly Fishing is way too technical for me. And costly! But the society is growing everywhere in Malaysia. Maybe in the future I would consider the option. I know a thing or twos about flyFishing. Essentially, coming to this seminar, made me understand more about this ancient sport.

Actually, Soft Plastic is still new to me. I started to use this Lure about a month ago. I still hasn’t catch any fish using it and I am the one to blame. My technique sucks! Having Mr Rob to talk on this new craze is something like someone giving you a good pillow when you are sleepy. Using SP as your ultimate lure is a good move. The SP not only look like a real thing, but that clever stuff can imitate real actions. To add , those clever yummy things, come with scent and flavour . What I learned from Mr Rob :

1. Rod- should be as light as possible with cork handle. Abu Garcia had produced purposely for softlure. I am using Sabpolo 5’ rod which is as close as it get to any Jap’s made soft lure rods.

2. Line- main line should be braided. Small in diameter and poundage. The ultimate reason is to feel when the fish bites. The use of shock leader is advisable but again, vanish or fluorocarbon is a must.

3. swivel- is not good. From braided to fluro, use uni-knots, and from there, directly tie the line to the soft lure (hook or jighead).

4. Presentation- the line should be free. Keep the line slack as when the fish take the lure, they will get spooky if the feel any resistant.

There are so many things to share. May be next time I’ll write about it.

We have lunch at 2pm. Tasty fried rice with fried chicken. In the middle of the frenzy, the organizer decided to have a lucky draw session with 10 rapalas and 3 Abu Garcia cardinal 101 to give away. I was not so lucky but babyFace was the luckiest among all. He got the no 1 price, Abu Garcia 101 Special Edition with 5 bearings. What a lucky B@st@rd... Hi hi hi.

The session restarted at 3pm. We were divided into 3 groups. Kelah lover with Mr Aznir, FlyFishing with Mr Novice and SP Junkies with Mr rob Marlin.

pok Tih is an old man around 60. He own at least 3 an acre wide ponds stuffed with patin, pacu, tilapia and lampam. Other species also can be fish out if you are lucky such as keli and Lee koh.

This was my 3rd times to fish here. My mission today was to land Pacu as my previous trip, i failed badly.

We were using chicken intestine as a bait. But never got closer to pacu as patin would have it first.

Pok Tih suggest to us to use rambutans as a bait. My first thought was, this old man must be kidding. But, not to hurt the old man's feeling, i hooked it up anyway.

i left the rod with rambutan bait at the pier and walk to the far side of pond to fish for patin or lampam.

an went by, suddenly, a big explosion happen just right infront of my eyes. The fish jump and make a dash to the pier's pillars. I saw Pok Tih holding my rod ( the one with rambutan bait) as the rod was inches away to become fish's toy.

I ran to the pier and pok tih handed me the rod. I tried to retrive the line but the fish fought with termendous strenght. suddenlly, the line felt light and the fish won.

Upon closer look, the hook was spoiled. It was a seahawk 2/0 hook. According to pok tih, the fish, was pacu. it weighs not less than 6kg. and i believed him.

This coming november, i will come back to fight the freaking pacu again

It was Aidilfitri. I decided to celebrate the big day at my inlaw’s . Not until the 3rd day of celebration that finally everybody was free from any family program. I woke up early that day, went to TCE tackle at wakaf Che yeh to get some supply on sinkers and hooks.

At 3.00 pm that day, Farmi and didie picked me up at my Inlaw’s. We circled around town for live baits and perumpun but to no avail, no shop opened due to the celebration. So we decided to use fish fillet and dead prawn as baits. But we also brought small ‘penyauk’ (angler’s landing scoop) just in case we if we come across anything that can be used as baits.

Arrived at Tok Bali around 5.00pm. Good news, our favourite spot was vacant. We unload our stuff and start to fish. We managed to land few Bajis and palm size tetanda and few Gelama Bongkok. Arround 8pm that night, a school of kekek (kikek as local said) was terrorizing the place. There was no rest for us. I was using 3 rods, but because of the frenzy, I had to use only one rod, yet, still I went crazy because of the attack. I never encounter with this kind of situation before. There were so many of them, thousand and thousand of kekek. The pack was huge, and we landed nothing but Kekek. It seemed, other spicies had run away from the spot. At 10pm that night, I had enough of Kekek and went retiring at a nearby food stall while Didie continuing fishing and securing our spot.

I went back to fish around 11pm. The water level had risen to the max. we could only fish from the pier. I witnessed another amazing phenomenon . There were hundreds of expolosion on the water surface. It showed something big and murderous lurking their prey. Apart from that, the kekek stopped taking the baits and replaced by Gelama Bongkok. It was not as crazy as what Kekek did, but still, it was great fishing.

At 3am, the attack of murderous predator from underneath getting much more frequent and the water exploded with tremendous sound. I was bitting my lips, hoping to catch one of them. I took my casting set and begin casting . I was using Rapala Shad Rap ( orange and yellow) belong to Farmi. I got nothing. I have to admit , I was suck at casting.
Both didie and Farmi went to buy some food, I was bored waiting for the fish to bite. I went under the pier with ‘penyauk’ to catch some sotong katak ( some sort of squid). Again, no sotong or udang around but so many small fish, later I learned, it was call Seliding by locals. It was never being used as a bait before because the fish had sharp needle size sting . I caught so many of them, put them in container filled with water to keep them alive. The fish have a transparent body, thus, when u expose them to any strong source of lighting, the fish look extremely beautiful. I carefully picked one, using a nail clipper, I cut away the sting and used it as a bait. I casted as far as I could and went lay down.

I was in and off… dizzy. Tried to sleep, but the pier’s concrete was too hard that my body aching. It was cold and windy and foggy. But the attack of murderous monster was never stop. Suddenly, didie’s rod shook violently. It was jumping up and down. The railing had stop it from thrown into the water. I quickly unzipped my sleeping bag and jumped to grab the the rod. It was didie’s ( actually, didie had no fishing set, it was mine and I let him use it every time he went fishing with me) that I used Seliding as a bait. Lucky for me that the drag was not lock. Just when I grabbed the rod, the fish started to run. And it fast. It was so strong that I thought either it was a silver barra or hippopotamus. The fish jumped and thrashed his body everywhere. I was using a 10p main line and 12 p shock leader. The fear of the line might broke was beyond anything. Slowly, I tighten the drag and apply a soft retrieve. When the fish struggled, I loosen the drag . It was 10 minutes and the fish showed no sign of surrendering. But I kept the line safe and try to avoid the fish run to the boats anchored near by. Then , I realized, if it was a big fish, how on earth I’m going to land it? There was no way I could just pull it up from the pier. It is a 10 feet drop. And my line would not doing any good. I turned off the reel’s brake and went to get the penyauk. With one hand on penyauk, other on the rod, I jumped the stairs down trying to get as close as I could to the water . Then the real fight begin. I retrieved fast and keeping the line straight. Finally, the fish gave up and ready to meet his maker. It was a freaking Senangin. My first ever senangin. Never caught one. But that night, that one was my first ever. I thank god, and thank the fish for taking my bait. Here, today, I have to admit to you all. I landed the biggest Senangin of the day using both unbranded rod and reel. That set was meant to be used by anyone who went fishing with me in case that person don’t have a fishing set. It was a great RM40 set.

I took the fish up on the pier. Grabbed my other two rods, using Seliding as baits, I casted at the same spot. I went back under the pier to catch some more Seliding as most of them that I kept in the container was dead. As I was doing my hunt on seliding, My daiwa Crossfire and Rapala Fsi 4000 shook. I throw the net scoop and bucket away and rushed up to the pier. To cut the story short, it was another Senangin. I hit a freaking jackport. I founded the perfect bait for Senangin to be applied at Tok Bali. Why ? Because, apart from another 3 more senangins, I also landed 3 huge Belukangs using the same bait. So did Farmi. He was shocked to learn that Seliding is a perfect bait. Tok Bali is Farmi’s play ground. He never heard people used Seliding as baits. Normally people will use Belanak as bait. He also experienced a good moment landed some monster that morning. In fact, he landed the biggest Belukang, around 4kg in weighs.

At 8am that morning, the water got calm again. The attack of Senangin on Belanak had stopped. I packed my stuff and rested. I have no more energy to fish. Its been 15 hours of fishing, and my right hand had swollen . I just watched farmi and Didie having great time landing Belukang one after another.

We reached kota Bahru at 11, and after a nice cold shower, I went off to the Angel’s land. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

No live baits around. All shop were closed due to the celebration.

we arrived at the spot around noon. We were targeting MJs as a main catch today. Despite our effort, no MJs were taken home. We managed to land common estuary species like Bolos and Kitangs.

As we packed our stuff, Seli saw something weird looking creature in the water. he quickly grabbed the creatures. The alien look creature were actually a pair of belangkas or HorseShoe crab. here is few info about the creature:

The horseshoe crab, horsefoot, king crab, or sauce-pan (Limulus polyphemus, formerly known as Limulus cyclops, Xiphosura americana, Polyphemus occidentalis) is a chelicerate arthropod. As a result, it is more closely related to spiders, ticks, and scorpions than to true crabs. Horseshoe crabs are most commonly found in the Gulf of Mexico and along the northern Atlantic coast of North America. A main area of annual migration is the Delaware Bay, although stray individuals are occasionally found in Europe.

Three other species from the same family in the Indian and Pacific Oceans are also called horseshoe crabs. The Japanese horseshoe crab (Tachypleus gigas) is found in the Seto Inland Sea, and is considered an endangered species because of loss of habitat. Two other species occur along the east coast of India: Tachypleus tridentatus and Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda. A research project to protect them is on in Chandipur

Semuji Agro Resort Kuantan

Semuji Agro Resort is located about 40km from Kuantan. It is a resort with agriculture theme. It is also a Camp for National Service. Plenty of chalets to be rented at a considerable price.

S A R also have plenty of man made lakes. One of it is where the heaven for anglers. You could apply any method of fishing here such as Flyfishing, bottom and casting. You are free to choose and use any kind of baits.

Once you got there, you have to register at the security post. There, the guard will give u a tag. When you are done, return the tag and you have to bring the catch to be scaled. RM7 for a kilo of patins and tilapias. This is the beauty of this place. You only pay on what you got.

I was introduced to this place by my fellow buddies from MFN ( Malaysian fishing . net) . On 25th Aug, we had a small gathering here. Mr Dell, Mr Giant, Mr Jagung and Mr Madie were the participants. The main objective was to catch any patin or tilapia using a flyset. They actually caught a few and we were having a great time together.

Since then, I was constantly revisit the place with my family or just alone. If you are happen to be in kuantan, check this place out. You could practice Catch and release as you don’t need the
fish.

I took a whole week off from work. With everyone at works, I had to fish alone.

It is a small river and not very famous among us. It is my new fishing ground. It is 35 km from my house, and no fighting over fishing spot. The place is wide and have plenty of good spots. The spot I chose is about 2 km from the sea. So, MJ, Barra, bolos, Kitang and others estuary species were expected.

it's Sunday again. And i wasn't feeling very well. I had no intention to go fishing today.
surprisingly, Joejie came knocking my door at 9am , with baits, fishing equipments, snack and drinks, today's newspaper and a car with a tankfull of gas. It was and invitation i cant resist.

45 mins later, we were fishing at Kuantan port- the famous breakwater.
It was my first trip here.

4 hours, and nothing . It was a blazing hot day, the tide was low and no fish. We packed and headed home. it was a shortest trip ever made by me.

Surcasting is more suitable here.
There are rocks everywhere. You might lost your sinkers more than a year of fishing.
Fast retrieve is a technique to apply here.

Belat River : A paradise for GP hunters

With GP season is nearly come to an end, our team decided to concentrate more on GP than anything else. Madie made an arrangement with the boat owner to charter 2 boats . With RM10 per day, with no engine, the price can be considered cheap.

Using a boat to hunt GP is far more successful than fishing from the river bank. The reason is simple, to access any potential place that couldn’t be reach by land. Most of the GPs, love to seek for shelter around Nipah’s tree , close to the river bank ( but deep, around 2-3 m) . The GPs normally stay in group or pack. If you can land one, there are plenty more underneath you.

GP is a scavenger. It likes to eat anything that is stink and emits strong scent. Thus, using anything that is stink for baits is okay. Normally , GP hunters will use earth worms, fish meat(fillet), hotdog, guppy fish, squid , shrimp, or whatever you could think off. An adult GP, when it takes the bait, normally, it happens very slow and hard to notice. You have to constantly check your rod by retrieving the line a bit. The juvenile GP is another way around. They tend to take the bait aggressively .

We reached the spot at 9.30 am. Madie and Sarul in one boat, and I was with Didie and Jojie. We decided not to go very far from the Jetty as rowing was a gruesome task.
Belat river is rich with GPs. After 2 hours, we landed few kilos of GPs.

At 2pm, it rained. It so heavy that we had to seek for a shelter under some nipah’s tree. It rained so hard that within few minutes, the boat almost sank . In the middle of the chaos, my rod, which was jutting out from the boat, shook violently , I quickly retrieved the line, and it was the biggest GP of the day . The rain stopped an hour later.

I went home at 3pm that evening as Didie had to catch a bus. Sarul and Madie kept fishing until 5pm.

I'm wet and cold, but happy as well.

Because of last week succesful trip, we decided to repeat the place one more time. This time we brought various type of baits.

1. Selayang(Decapterus russelli) meat (fillet)
2. Sepat( Trichogaster trichopterus) - live baits
3. udang - shrimps - live baits
4. sotong- squid meat

There was no snapper or barra around. But we managed to land few juvenil grouper (300g-400g). kekek (Secutor insidiator), ketuka (Himantura walga) and few others common eatuary species.

I needed a new reel . So i went to Angler's World at Telok Sisek road to make a purchase. With my tight budget, i could only spent RM250 only. My brain was set to Shimano Nasci 3000. After spending almost an hour, i made my choice, Rapala sx4i at RM118 and Daiwa crossfire at RM55. so I could spend what was left on better braided line. Am i regreting the purchased? No i'm not. Ostat just bought a boat for that purposes. twice a week they go out to hunt the tasty litle creatures. Last week (Sunday,22nd Jul) was my “no fishing” Sunday. I had to take my son to his kindergarten because they were having a Family Day . Eventhough, the event took place at Balok beach, I didn’t bring any fishing set.

Well, Today was a payback time. This time, we were hoping to catch some fish instead of GPs. Ostat and BabyFace had different agenda, so we had to split again.

This trip, actually happened in mistake. We were supposed to fish at Belat River using a 10 footer fibre with no engine rented from a friend’s friend. But after 2 hours waiting, the man hadn’t show up. We tried to reach him by phone, but there was no answer. So we changed strategy. We just fished on the river bank. We spent an hour and decided to head to Penor to fish at my cousin’s fish pond. Bad luck stormed upon us again. The pond was empty, there was no water in it. My cousin just emptied the pond due to parasites attack.

So, jojie suggested, we should go to Cherok Paloh, and we all agreed. On the way to cherok Paloh, we had to cross the Penor Bridge. From the distance, we saw an old man was casting his bait from the bridge. So we decided to stop and have a look on it. To our surprise, the man managed to land 5 Cermins, and dozen of cencarus.

After chit chatted with the old man, we decided to try our luck here and the trip to cherok paloh was cancelled. The kind old man was happy to share some of his baits with us. The baits, fish fillet (soak in anchovy sauce) were used and surprisingly the fish like it.

Kitang were plenty. After 4 hours of fishing, we took home 3 kg of kitang and other species like red snapper, bolos , and cermin . I believed, there are white barras terrorizing the place as I witnessed them on their hunting mission ( jojie called it killing-spree) . And, there were also needle fish (todak, crocodilus) , and they were the bad one. When you reel in ( to hook new baits etc), they will chase your line and cut away your hooks… it happen to me at least a dozen time.

CROC attack in Kota Bahru Kelantan

KOTA BHARU: Hanya tiga minit memisahkan Ibrahim Yaakob, 60, dengan maut apabila diserang buaya ketika mandi di tepi rumah rakitnya di Sungai Kelantan, dekat Lorong Minyak Gas, di sini, kira-kira 6.40 pagi semalam.

Ibrahim yang ditemui di rumahnya berkata, kejadian berlaku ketika dia hendak mandi di sungai itu.

“Ketika berada di dalam sungai untuk mandi, tiba-tiba tangan kiri pak cik terasa seperti digigit sesuatu dan kemudian berasa macam diseret ke bahagian sungai yang agak dalam.

“Masa itu barulah nampak buaya berkenaan,” katanya.

Dalam keadaan terkejut, kata Ibrahim, dia segera menyentap tangan kirinya yang sedang digigit, namun buaya itu semakin ganas dan menggigit kaki kirinya pula.

Ini menyebabkan dia bertindak nekad menendang kepala buaya itu sehingga haiwan berkenaan melepaskan gigitannya dan menghilangkan diri.

Menurutnya, dia memang cemas apabila terasa sesuatu menggigit tangan kirinya.

“Tapi, saya nekad melawan bagi menyelamatkan diri,” katanya.

Katanya, buaya sepanjang kira-kira 2.4 meter itu turut melibas ekornya, mujur dia dapat bertindak cepat.

“Seorang jiran, Azman Jaafar, 48, menghantar saya ke di Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II (HRPZ II) untuk rawatan lanjut,” katanya.

Ibrahim berkata, dia sudah biasa mandi di tepi rumah rakitnya sejak menetap di situ kira-kira 38 tahun lalu.

Bagaimanapun, kejadian serangan buaya itu pertama kali berlaku terhadapnya.

“Sejak mendiami rumah rakit ini dari mula berkahwin hingga sekarang dan mempunyai lapan anak, belum pernah berlaku kejadian diserang buaya walaupun kelibat haiwan itu berjemur sering dilihat,” katanya.

Berikutan itu, katanya, pihak berkuasa perlu mengambil tindakan sewajarnya bagi memastikan kejadian sama tidak berlaku kepada orang lain.

“Saya juga menasihatkan kanak-kanak supaya tidak bermain di tepi sungai itu kerana bimbang buaya itu akan mengganas,” katanya.

Isterinya, Kamariah Mahmud, 53, berkata ketika kejadian, dia menjerang air di dapur sebelum terdengar bunyi kocakan air kuat disusuli jeritan suaminya.

“Mendengarkan jeritan itu, saya bergegas ke pintu belakang dan mendapati suami dalam keadaan sangat lemah dan berlumuran darah di belakang rumah,” katanya.

Sementara itu, Pengarah Jabatan Hidupan Liar dan Taman Negara (Perhilitan) negeri, Pazil Abdul Patah, ketika dihubungi mengesahkan kejadian itu dan mengarahkan anggotanya memantau di sepanjang sungai itu.

Beliau tidak menolak kemungkinan, haiwan yang menyerang Ibrahim daripada spesies buaya tembaga yang pernah beberapa kali dilihat berjemur di pinggir sungai sekitar kawasan berkenaan.

“Saya menasihatkan orang ramai berhati-hati dan tidak melakukan sebarang aktiviti di sungai itu bagi mengelak berlaku kejadian tidak diingini,” katanya.

The story above is about a crocodile attack on a 60 year old Ibrahim Yakob in Kota bahru kelantan. What caught my attention is, that was a same spot where i used to fish with Fahmi in his 12 footer boat. actually, this freaking croc has been spotted there since march. And the goverment could do nothing about it. They should catch the croc and release it to some remote area in ulu kelantan.

Port Dickson: bussiness or pleasure? ...or fishing?

it was a bussiness trip. Another boring trip to a perfect fishing ground. Unfortunately, the seminar ended at 10p.m. So i had no chance to have a good fishing moment there. I brought along my fishing set, so everynite , i slept as early as i could then, woke up at 2 a.m to fish. But by the time i reach the good spot, the water had subside, and casting was not an option. There was no bait as well. I didnt find time to buy any. All i could do was , chasing small crabs for bait. But that damn creatures are fast. I managed to catch one, and i used it as a bait. But, nothing happen. I went back to sleep at 4 a.m. and no picture taken as it was too dark.

It was raining and the spot was wet and muddy. This time we narrowed the objective to land as many giant prawn as we can.

I just bought a new rod to replace the broken cherrywood. It is a Daiwa Apollo Classic PE2. A six footer rod with light tip. eventhough it is not made from graphite, but amazingly, it is light easy to use.

Almost everybody landed some GP that day except Jojie. another bad day for him.
But he swear he will return to terrorize the place again.

It’s Sunday again. Fishing is the best thing to do. We were planning to charter a boat in Merchong (Rompin), but due to unexpected reasons, we cancelled the trip ( it was cancelled because epul and babyFace couldn’t join us… they were the culprit behind the cancellation) And we don’t want to proceed without them even though replacements are easy to get .

Ostat was our organizer for this trip. Sungai Remand is his playground. He been fishing there since 2003 . Most of us never fish here before except Sharul. Sungai Remand is a small river that flows into Kuantan river. It is situated in Bukit Sagu near the Pusat Bina Negara. It was rich with giant prawn and predators such as Toman and Haruan. Sadly, due to the logging activity, the river is now badly polluted. The water quality dropped and there are debris left by the @ucking loggers on the river bed.

Malaysia has so many great rivers. They are once a healthy river. But ruined by the loggers. The government should do something to stop the pollution. Upstream, there is a Dam under construction, and it worsen the situation. We cannot expect the contractors (both for logging and Dam) to obey all the rules stated, but the ministry should take the matters seriously. They should station an officer in every site, and that officer is an anti-bribe. 10 years from now, there will be no clean river left in Malaysia . No perfect place for anglers except paypond. And our juniors will only see the Giant Prawn in zoo. And, too, the firm like Abu Garcia, Shimano, Penn, berkely, will force to shut down their operation as nobody will buy rods and reels anymore. With that, it also make me wonder, those firm should play their parts in river conservation. But from what I know, there is almost none.

When you read my statement above, you already know the result of my trip. Yes, we landed some giant prawn and baby baung, but according to ostat, this was not OK. He used to take home kilos of giant prawn. But he also stressed that due to last nite rain, we shouldn’t expect anything big.

It was not a perfect and successful trip for me. My Berkley broke into half. I was using a small goldfish as bait when its happen. I was stunned when the monster bit, and my reflect was not fast enough. The freaking monster took the bait and sped to nearby snag for protection. My Abu 300 couldn’t stop the monster on time, and that freaking monster was safely hiding under the snags. As I’m trying to get my line free ( I was using 20pound steel leader) , the rod exploded. I was really really sad that I called the day off. The rod was so special to me. It was a gift from my wife. And nothing could replace it , unless she buy me a new one…. Hi hi hi…

So , who were the successors? Madie and Sharul…. Madie just bought his first rod for giant prawn this morning, and he landed the biggest GP of the trip. Sharul was really cocky today, he talked shitty things to me… but I understand him, he was so happy to land so many GPs in his whole life. Poor Jojie.. he landed nothing..nada….zero.. and this was his second trip with me with him taken nothing home. Ostat? He took home at least a couple GPs and few baungs… well, poor me, no GP. Only broken Berkley to make this trip memorable to me. But I believe in God, and He must have reasons behind all this (like, the cherrywood is not good enough, he wanted me to buy Shimano Bassterra …ha ha ha) .

Fly for Kelah- fishing ground review

Location: Charas Cave, Pekan Panching off Jln sg Lembing, kuantan.

This is a great fishing spot for flyfishing. You actually can stand on the middle of the river as it is just a knee deep. The deeper part of the river is just next to the river bank.
You can cast your fly comfortably . The current is at a moderate speed.

If study the poor picture below carefully, you will notice there is a structure just below the water. It is actually a small but strong wooden bridge linking Pekan Pancing to some estate on the other side. You can also stand on that bridge if you are willing to jump into the river if any estate’s vehicle wanted to use it.

Bottom Fishing is not suitable as the current will make your No 8 sinker floats. Plus, there is almost no place for you to cast as the river bank is full of vegetation. But if you have a boat, and errrrr… crazy enuff, anything is possible.

There are Kelah and sebarau spotted and caught by the local. Personally, this spot is not my type, and the story of kelah maybe a bit of fairy tale, but any angler who want to prove me wrong, you are welcome to try.

It was happened to be Joji's day off. So we went to fish at sg pandan again. It was raining and we had to stay inside the car. No sebarau today, but plenty of lampam and baung. We took home the lampam and Keli. I gave the tilan (eel) to mr sahak.

Few things happened over last weekend, so The Sunday Fishing Team’s trip was cancelled. But that didn’t mean we stayed at home watching television. We still went out to fish but not as a team.

SATURDAY 23rd June

Sepul and I went to Sg Pandan to hunt for sebarau. But no luck. The water was murky. 4 hours without a catch was enough. At 4pm that day, Babyface called. He was a few kilometers ahead of us at Kuantan Silver Barra Fish pond. The owner of that pond decided to fill it up with Silver Barra. The previous owner died in a road accident a couple of months before. Back then, the pond was full of Patin.

Sepul and I packed our gears and headed to the Pond. Our objective was to share the glory moment if he manages to land any silver barra. We were tired and wanted to call the day off. Up until 6pm, babyface caught nothing. So, Sepul and I went back.

At 8pm that nite, BabyFace texted me. He had landed the freaking fish. I walked to the pond ( the pond is less than 100m from my house), and snapped few low quality pictures.. and that arrogant Babyface was smilling like a millionaire.

SUNDAY 24th JUNE

My big bro, Joji, Madie from MFN and I made our way to Cherok Paloh beach near Pekan district. We wanted to take home a bucket of Mangrove Jack. We made a quick pitstop at Tanah Putih settlement to buy live prawns for baits. 10 bucks of prawns, an hour later, we reached Cherok Paloh. It was 10a.m. and we stop at 4pm…
The catch? Ha ha… 4 small size stingrays (ketuka/ tetuka) , Bolos and tetanda… no sign of MJ anywhere.

Sepul’s trip

Along with his father, he went to fish at Kuantan river. Looking for giant prawns. It was a trip in his father 12 footer with Mercury 5hp. A kilo of giant prawns and baungs could be considered lucky because of the bad weather and water condition. Most of my friends who went out fishing that day, reported the same.

I needed to go to fish as my fingers getting itchy. The nearest river is next to my father’s house in pandan2. I brought 3 rods and a handful of earth worms.
It is actually not really a river, but a man made river for agriculture purposes. The river flows to Sg Pandan, and that Sg Pandan flows to Sg Kuantan. Well what the heck. Fish or not to fish.
I fished there a couple of time before. Managed to land baung and lampam…and also Labi labi or fresh water turtle. Certainly, there is no Tapah in here. So, my trip today was nothing but to fish any fish happen to live in that “longkang”.

It was 4.30 pm. Baung after baung… and lampam… then lampam again… and selat. Without knowing. I’m out of bait. So I used my long pole net to get some live bait. Prawns are plenty and easy to get. Well same things happen… baung lampam baung lampam. As it getting dark, I noticed, there were so many seluangs jumped frantically as they were chased by a monster. I used my net again to catch some of it for baits.

A couple of minutes went by and suddenly my cheapo first stick shook like hell. I made my move, and… Oh My God… something ferocious has taken the bait… and for sure it was not a lampam… the fish jumped , trying to free itself from the hook… I recognize the fish… even though I never caught one, but I know… this is the famous sebarau. I have to land this fish. It took me about 3- 4 minutes to land the taiko… I stopped some kids, and asked one of them to take my picture with the famous taiko… he he, my first sebarau in my whole life. Even though it was a baby sebarau, but sebarau is sebarau…and I fished it out from a “longkang” ha ha ha…

Where to shop in Kuantan

If you are happen to be in kuantan to fish, you might want to buy some supplies for your tackle box. Below are the list of the tackle shops. Some of it, I forgot the name because I don’t really care about it.

1. Tmn Tas, batu 5 Jalan Gambang
behind Tunas Manja. It is a combo of petshop, aquarium and tackle shop. You can get hooks, sinkers, line as well as rods and reels (branded and unbranded). Live bait like worms, small prawns and keli are sold, but on weekend , the chances are slim. It is a very busy shop , sometimes you had to wait for assistance. You could ask for discount on selected rods and reels.

2. Tmn Guru, batu 6 Jalan Gambang
It is a combo shop too. To me, this is the last place I go to buy sinkers and hooks. It is a bit expensive. But open on Sunday. Limited live baits. Rarely this place have any stock of worms.

3. Medan Warisan, tanah putih feri (opposite giant hypermarket)
I go to this place to look only for live small prawn as they were cheap. No worms, and small size kelis are sold at rm0.60 per fish. Sinkers and hooks are sold at a cut throat price. For eg, size 6 sinker is sold at rm0.50 pc. Where in tmn guru for rm0.45 and in taman tas for rm0.40. No rods or reels on sale.

4. Kg Padang – jln sungai lembing
This shop is belong to disable. This is my favourite spot to shop for sinkers and hooks and baits. This place got plenty of baits to choose from. Worms, perumpun, keli etc. A packet of worms cost you rm2.50. Sinkers and hooks are cheap. Size 6 sinkers are sold at rm0.30pc. This is a combo shop as well. Rods and reels are sold at an average price. Mostly Lemax . If you are looking a combo set for udang, they sell it at less than rm20.

5. TCE tackles sdn bhd. Jalan beserah.
Totally tackle shop… everything an angler need is there. But don’t expect to get any Abu Garcia from this outlet. For further information log on to

6. Anglers World Jln telok sisek , (near BCB and Bank islam)

This is a heaven for anglers. I bought my Berkley and Abu here. So many branded items can be chose at a reasonable price. Please look out for Products on clearance to get a knock out price. A variety of artificial lures can be chose as well as sinkers and hooks.
Feel free to ask for help if u need any. Sometimes, if you are lucky, there will be some second hand item on sale, and most of them are in good condition as they also do rods and reels servicing/ repair. U can order a spare part for your damage reel. Lots of accessories are on sale such as rare angler’s shirt, wading boots, sunglasses etc.

7. ROCKSON- jln besar. Opposite of General post Office/ maybank/ Hongkong bank

Another heaven for anglers. You can shop for engines, Fish finder, satellite phone, branded rods and reels etc. I’m not sure about live baits, but artificial lures are plenty.

Well, Reviews above is just based on my experiences . if you ever planning to fish in kuantan, you might want to check the place out. There are few more tackle shop here. But I dare not to write any comment on it as I never go there

SUNGAI RIAU KUANTAN

We gathered next to riau’s bridge. The 15 minutes hike seemed forever because of the wet and slippery path. The water level was high and the chances to land giant prawn plummeted to zero. But we fished anyway.

Main objectives were changed to land any Tapah. We concentrated more on bottom as well as floating. As for bottom, typical earth worms were used. And for Tapah fishing, we used live bait (Keli).

6 hours of fishing was fun but we were frustrated because could not land any giant prawn or tapah. Baung and lampam are common here. They are too common that we almost gone crazy. Every minute, somebody will shout “ it’s a freaking baung again!!!” .
Most baung here are babies. But if you are lucky that day, you could land the “father” baung. We released the babies back to wild… but Sarul kept the lampam for his aquarium.

Around noon, the water level started to subside. And so were the fish. We spent time cooking our lunch… Curry Flava Maggi. Suddenly, my Berkley cherrywood bend ferociously, the reel scream because I set the drag at a very minimum level. I jumped and reeled in the line. A few short moments, I managed to land the fish with my Abulon 6 pound monofilament leader. It was a TILAN… a snake like fish with beautiful “batik” on his body.

It was 2pm. We did nothing more than chatting around. Suddenly, Babyface’s rod twitched. And it was Selat. A small scale of Belida. No belida today but we managed to land several Selats . Selat is not really a big fighter comparing to sebarau. But, the fish can do acrobatic action whenever they panic.

Before going out fishing.....

Have you ever experienced your line broke because of snag and debris underwater? How long do you take to set new line? Well, if you are well prepared, it just takes a minute or two for to set the line and start fishing again. Learnt from previous experiences, I managed to come out with very simple technique. It is shown in the picture below. I use small plastic bags to keep the ready-made leaders. It is better than using a piece of polystyrene to hold few ready-made leaders because it might get tangle easily and consume space of your tackle box.

I use "malaysian ice cream" plastic.

SOAP in your tackle box. Whenever I got home from fishing trip, my 6 year old boy always try to elude my hug… he said I am stink… so soap is a best solution. Always wash your hand using soap. Not just for the fragrant, but for the sake of hygiene too.

if possible, use an ati bacterial soap... cost you two ringgit onli..

Earlier preparation will give you more time fishing than wasting precious time tying knots for your rig.

KELANTAN RALLY

28th May
It was mid year school holiday. It was time to visit my in laws in kota bahru. I used kuantan – ajil – kuala terengganu - penarik – tok bali – kota bahru route. Made a quick stop at tok bali to cast at the famous breakwater. Well, no luck. Spent nearly 1 hour there. After 5 hours of driving, casting seemed something crazy to be done.

29th May.
With my sister in law’s husband, Farmi, we went to pengkalan datu to fish. Our target was kakap merah or maybe some unlucky siakap. Well to no luck again, the place was packed with evening anglers. Because of that, we are forced to do BOTTOM. We used belanak meat as a bait. Managed to get few Duris . I tried local menu of bait, selar filet. To my surprise, 3 kakap merah were caught.
We decided to proceed to Pantai Senak break water in bachok district. What a beautiful place. It was the same river where we fished at pengkalan datu. This is the river outlet into south Cina sea. We landed almost 2 kilos of bolos and tetanda. It was night with full moon. We didn’t bring any lantern or batteries operated light. So we packed and went home.

30th may
I went to pantai senak again . This time, I brought my family along. I tried to cast. But after 20 minutes, I decided to BOTTOM. Last night bolos curry was delicious. I want more bolos!!! Well it was certainly a bolos season. Within 2 hours of fishing, nearly 2 kilos of bolos were caught. I manage to land Ikan Nabi too. What a weird looking fish. I set the fish free as I have no appetite to eat that creature. And of course, lots of Duris….

31st May

Farmi was pissed off when he knew I went to senak without him. So have to make out with him today. Amir, farmi’s co-worker was also on the list. He owns a rechargeable lantern. We fished from 4pm until midnite with Bolos as a number 1 catch. There were few local people casting at a far distance. No luck.

1st June.
My wife organized a family reunion in semerak near the Death Lagoon (Lagun maut). We rent a couple of chalet (MZA CHALET). I was 1st to arrive. So I went to check out the Death Lagoon with my light Berkley set with Abu Garcia 300. At the end of the line, red and silver popper. No luck. Changed to soft lure. No luck too. Changed to spinner, No luck. Met two local guys spear fishing. They caught Kertangs. They said, people rarely fish here as there is no good fish around…. Well, I caught nothing here, and there was no sign of other anglers here, may be they were telling the truth. Around 6pm that day, Farmi and I, and 2 cousins of mine, went to tok bali. Bottom again!!! This time we fish at the fish market. SENANGIN and KERAPU were on the menu!!!! Most senangin we managed to land was landed with fish filet as bait. And Kerapu on live small prawns. So whenever you are planning to fish in Tok Bali, try to fish behind the fish market instead of the breakwater.

At 10pm that night, Farmi and me went to Tok Bali water lock about 10 km from the fish market. The water level was subsided. The good thing about this place is, u can choose to fish for kerapu on one side, and giant prawn on the other side. Because of poor lighting, I snap no picture of that place. No kerapu for us, but few giant prawns were landed. Locals use live prawn the size of our toes as a bait for kerapu. Wow.. that size of prawn usually end up in my plate, but these people use them as a bait. Most prawn that they use as a bait were caught on site .

2nd June
There was a hot news about local people spotted some crocodile in sungai Kelantan. The reptile was spotted at Kota and Pasir Pekan. It is the place where I used to fish with Farmi on his 12 footer boat. Because of that, I dare not to take any chances to fish there. So we went to fish at Kg China for a giant prawn. We chose to BOTTOM at the river bank behind the Buddha temple. We were using Perumpun as a bait. 2 hours of fishing giving us approx. a kilo of good looking giant prawn. And again, duri… what with this fish? They are everywhere… hmmmm

Later that afternoon, we with our family went to Padang Kala near Melor/Mulong area to fish at Pak Tih pay pond. This place charge you only with the fish you caught. Pay pond is not really on my favourite list but my wife and the boys can enjoy themself landed patin, lampam or bawal merah. We took home some of the patins caught. No bawal merah today as we dont have any steel leader… that beast got very sharp teeth. twice, my nephew lost my daiwa rod/ shimano spinner. My advice, if you know that place is potential to land big fish, keep your eyes on that rod.. luckily the water just a waist deep. Twice, farmi had to salvage the freaking rod..

with that, my Rally was over. My conclusion, kelantan is a perfect place for you to fish. Next time i might try the Paddy Field for snakehead species and maybe for some Puyus.. with 2 hours drive from kota bahru, you can fish in tasik banding. I’m planning to fish there on November.
